About the Role

We are partnering with a highly specialised renewable energy business who are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer – Ground Source Heat Pump Service Engineer to support their growing portfolio of large‑scale, safety‑critical systems across the UK.

This is not a general HVAC or FM Field Service Engineer role. It is a specialist Field Service Engineer position focused on the service, maintenance and fault‑finding of complete ground source heat pump systems, including pressurised closed‑loop circuits and hot water plant. The successful Field Service Engineer must be capable of working safely and independently from day one in plant room environments.

The work carried out by this Field Service Engineer is lower in volume but significantly higher in technical complexity, requiring deep system understanding rather than component‑only or reactive HVAC experience.

Role Overview

As a senior Field Service Engineer within the Technical Services team, you will take full responsibility for the safe operation, diagnosis and maintenance of complete ground source heat pump systems, not just individual HVAC components.

This Field Service Engineer role involves autonomous working across UK sites, including occasional overnight stays, delivering high‑quality engineering support while maintaining strict safety, compliance and documentation standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely service, maintain and repair ground source heat pump systems as complete, pressurised systems
  • Work on circulation pumps, buffer vessels, heat exchangers and associated pipe networks
  • Carry out detailed diagnostics and system‑level fault finding
  • Complete routine servicing, system isolation, refill and venting of pressurised systems
  • Support commissioning and verification of mechanical and electromechanical systems
  • Assist with mechanical retrofit works where required
  • Maintain accurate system maintenance records and compliance documentation
  • Produce clear, detailed service reports following site visits
  • Ensure all work is completed in strict accordance with Health & Safety procedures
Knowledge, Skills & ExperienceEssential
  • City & Guilds 2079 F‑Gas (or equivalent)
  • NVQ Level 2 in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Building Services, or equivalent
(Significant relevant experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications)
  • Strong hands‑on experience working with pressurised heating and cooling systems
  • Demonstrable exposure to ground source heat pump systems as full installations
  • Confidence operating independently as a Field Service Engineer in plant room environments
  • Strong diagnostic ability at system level
  • Full UK driving licence
Desirable
  • NVQ Level 3 or HNC in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning / Building Services
  • Electrical qualifications (18th Edition / BS 7671)
  • OEM or manufacturer service background
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities
Personal Attributes
  • Highly safety‑conscious and methodical in approach
  • Calm and confident working on complex, high‑risk systems
  • Clear communicator with strong written documentation skills
  • Comfortable working independently with full technical accountability
  • Willing to travel and stay away as required
Why Apply?
  • Specialist, technically challenging Field Service Engineer role within the renewables sector
  • Work on complex, full‑system ground source heat pump installations
  • Fully remote, field‑based role with no on‑call
  • Company van with personal use
  • Long‑term stability within a specialist engineering business
Important Note

This Field Service Engineer role involves working on pressurised hot water and ground source systems where incorrect procedures can present serious risk. Applicants must be able to demonstrate prior experience operating safely and independently on complex systems.
